When to Book a Gynaecology Consultation

You do not have to put up with symptoms because they are common. A consultation can provide period pain help and clarify fibroid treatment options.

We can assess:

  • Heavy, prolonged, irregular, or painful periods

  • Pelvic pain, pressure, bloating, or pain during or after sex

  • Bleeding between periods, after sex, or after menopause

  • Possible fibroids, ovarian cysts, polyps, adenomyosis, infection, or endometriosis

  • Fertility, contraception, vaginal symptoms, and period-related bowel or urinary symptoms

Seek urgent medical care if bleeding is very heavy, pain is sudden or worsening, or you feel faint, short of breath, have chest pain, or have fever with pelvic pain.

What Happens at Your Gynaecology Consultation

We begin by listening to your symptoms, cycle, health history, medicines, prior procedures, fertility goals, and what matters to you.

  • Examination with consent: An abdominal or internal pelvic examination is offered only if useful and agreed to. You can ask why it is recommended, request a chaperone, pause, or decline.

  • Targeted tests: Depending on symptoms, these may include pregnancy, blood, or infection testing; a pelvic ultrasound; or diagnostic ultrasound for endometriosis. NICE recommends a full blood count for heavy menstrual bleeding.

  • Imaging and referral: Hysteroscopy or ultrasound may help assess a polyp, submucosal fibroid, uterine concern, pelvic mass, or adenomyosis. A normal examination or ultrasound does not rule out endometriosis.

Bring prior results, a medicine list, dates of bleeding or pain, and a symptom diary if you have one. Tell us if pregnancy is possible.

Assessment, Treatment and Follow-up Options

  • Symptom tracking, education, and planned follow-up

  • Medication for pain, bleeding, infection, or iron deficiency; hormonal options when suitable

  • Ultrasound, laboratory testing, or referral for hysteroscopy, including hysteroscopy polypectomy when indicated

  • Discussion of fibroid management, fertility assessment, or endometriosis surgery; minimally invasive surgery only when appropriate

Before any procedure, a separate discussion covers benefits, alternatives, risks, recovery time, and expected outcomes. We also explain side effects, medicine interactions, and possible effects on fertility before prescribing.
