Patient Support and CSR Activities

Patient Support and CSR Activities – ACE, Kerugoya

Good care does not end at the clinic door, and it should not depend on where you live or what you can afford. At the African Centre for Endometriosis in Kerugoya, Kirinyaga, Kenya, our patient support and CSR (corporate social responsibility) activities bring information, surgical care and compassion closer to the women and communities who need them most. They include the Healing Mama Africa initiative.

Patient Support and CSR at a Glance

  • Patient support: Clear explanations, confidential counselling, personalised follow-up and help finding the right next step.
  • Flagship initiative: Healing Mama Africa, which brings global surgeons to Kerugoya to train clinicians and operate on patients.
  • Community outreach: Laparoscopy Mashinani surgical camps and medical missions across Kenya and Uganda.
  • How to get involved: Seek support, refer a patient, partner with us, sponsor an event or volunteer.

Patient Support at the African Centre for Endometriosis

Living with pelvic pain, heavy periods or delayed pregnancy is hard, and many women are dismissed or feel ashamed to speak up. We aim to make every visit feel safe, private and respectful.

Our patient support includes:

  • Time to listen: We take your full story before suggesting any test or treatment.
  • Plain-language explanations: You will understand your diagnosis, options, risks and costs before you decide.
  • Confidential counselling: A safe space to talk about pain, intimacy, fertility and fears.
  • Personalised follow-up: Regular reviews, so you are not left to manage a long-term condition alone.
  • Care coordination: Help arranging scans, referrals and, where needed, input from other specialists.
  • Reliable education: Evidence-based information shared by Dr Joe Njagi on TikTok, Facebook and Instagram.

Why Community Outreach Matters

The Lancet Commission on Global Surgery estimated that about 5 billion people worldwide cannot access safe, affordable surgical care, most of them in low- and middle-income countries. Women’s surgical needs are often among those left waiting.

Endometriosis adds another barrier. The World Health Organization estimates that about 1 in 10 women and girls of reproductive age are affected. Research on endometriosis among African women, co-authored by Dr Njagi, highlights limited awareness and diagnosis across the continent.

Outreach narrows that gap by taking skilled care and knowledge to where women already are.

Healing Mama Africa Trust

Healing Mama Africa is an initiative championed by Dr Joe Njagi – founder, to expand access to endometriosis care in Africa. It brings surgeons, educators and patient advocates from around the world to Kerugoya, to share skills and operate on women who might otherwise wait years for specialist care.

Its 2026 conference and bootcamp took place at ACK Mt. Kenya Hospital, Kerugoya, from 16th to 21st March, with a focus on endometriosis and oncologic care. The second version is being held in Kigali Rwanda as from 1st – 4th March2027.  The programme combined three things:

  • Multidisciplinary approach for clinicians
  • Complex surgery for patients with advanced disease
  • Education and advocacy for patients and the wider community

Laparoscopy Mashinani

Dr Njagi founded the Laparoscopy Mashinani Trust Fund in 2017 to bring minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery closer to communities, not only to major city hospitals. The initiative earned a Kenya Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society (KOGS) presidential award in 2020.

One example is the Laparoscopy Mashinani Surgical Camp in Nyeri, held with the Kenya Society of Endoscopic Specialties from 29 July to 2 August 2019.

Medical missions across Kenya and Uganda

Since 2013, Dr Njagi has taken part in more than 20 medical missions, offering surgical care and skills transfer in public and teaching hospitals. These include:

  • Mbarara University of Science and Technology Hospital, Uganda (regular missions)
  • Mengo Hospital, Kampala (2024)
  • Pumwani Maternity Hospital, Nairobi (2025)
  • Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, Kisumu (2024)
  • Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, Eldoret (2023)
  • A.C.K. Mt. Kenya Hospital, Kerugoya (2023)
